Nick & Jamie

How We Met

It was June 2011. Jamie had just graduated college and was not thrilled about it. She lamented, “how will I ever meet anyone in this giant, awful, impersonal city?” To cheer her up, her friend Rachel took her out to a local dive bar. Little did they know, that local dive bar was actually well-renowned beer bar, The Daily Pint, and Nick’s favorite spot. Working long hours at a tech start-up that he didn’t really like, Nick often visited The Daily Pint to unwind. He was doing just that when Jamie walked through the door that summer night.

The details of who approached who in this story are fiercely debated. Nevertheless, the two spent the entire evening side-by-side. Nick taught Jamie how to play shuffleboard, convinced her to karaoke Piano Man and at the end of the night, stole her hat. “Now we’ll have to meet again,” he thought. The next morning Pajama Pants and Fedora Woman woke up with the feeling that something wonderful had just begun.

Now, there’s a piece missing from this love story. Soon after dating Nick and Jamie discovered something strange- they had grown up down the street from one another! In fact, you can see Nick’s house from Jamie’s backyard! They had mutual friends, attended the same events and even played on the same hill. But as fate would have it, it wasn’t until they moved away from their hometown that the two paths finally crossed.

The Proposal

When you find someone you love and want to spend the rest of your life with, it tends to come up in conversation. Nick and Jamie started talking about their future together long ago. So, Jamie was pretty sure a proposal was coming, she just didn’t know when. For the type-A planner, this uncertainty was a bit unnerving. Every holiday, vacation, or special occasion Jamie was on it- nails done, looking good and ready to say yes! This presented a serious challenge for Nick who wanted to give Jamie the perfect surprise proposal. Unbeknownst to her, he had a plan!

In September the two embarked on a 10-day road trip through the Pacific Northwest. They journeyed 2500 miles, stopping in a different city almost every night. They stayed in funky hotels, hiked through National parks and saw everything from volcanos to wild elk. On the last night they stayed in a treehouse! Now, before they left, Jamie had predicted Nick might propose here. But the journey had been so incredible that the thought of a proposal had completely left her mind. Jamie couldn’t have been more surprised when high above the ground, at sunset, Nick got down on one knee and asked her to marry him! She cried, said yes and screamed “We’re Engaged” into the forest! They chopped off a piece of bark from the treehouse to commemorate the event and celebrated with an engagement dinner of hot dogs and s’mores. Nick’s plan had worked! It was perfect.

That Nick managed to bring an engagement ring with him the entire trip without Jamie noticing is a feat she will forever marvel at.
